SUMMARY:Save Our Signs: Countering Censorship through Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Save Our Signs is a crowdsourced research project launched in response to the Trump administration issuing "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History" an executive order that targets educational resources found in National Parks Service (NPS) sites across the country. We invite members of the public to visit NPS sites\, engage with history\, and take photos of interpretive signs to be preserved in a public archive. By early 2026\, the government removed or censored over 50 signs at NPS sites. Censored topics range from history of slavery at Independence National Historical Park to the long history of Indigenous stewardship at Acadia National Park to climate change at Glacier National Park. In this session\, we will describe how we used crowdsourcing\, geospatial expertise\, and cross-departmental collaboration to respond to this historic threat to information.

SUMMARY:Leading from the Library: Developing and Implementing AI Strategy from a Student-Centered Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Academic libraries are uniquely positioned to take the lead on campus as AI reshapes teaching\, learning\, and scholarship. This session explores how our library has moved beyond reactive conversations to proactively shaping institutional AI strategy through the work of Concordia University\, St. Paul's Library and Curriculum and Instruction Center (CIC). As the library and CIC staff have worked on AI-related projects\, they have shaped and helped form a university-wide AI framework and a consistent AI syllabus statement.\n\nCIC is implementing a number of AI initiatives on campus\, including tutorials\, faculty development sessions\, tool implementation\, and a comprehensive student AI use scale. These collaborations across instruction librarians\, instructional design\, academic support\, and LMS teams create a comprehensive\, student-centered AI framework. Rather than framing AI use as a compliance issue\, we approached it as an opportunity to reframe student success.\n\nAttendees will leave with:\nA scalable model for AI assignment transparencyStrategies for collaborative policy developmentConcrete examples of student- and faculty-facing supportA framework for positioning the library as a leader in responsible AI integrationJoin us to explore how academic libraries can move from AI uncertainty to intentional leadership—supporting faculty innovation while centering student learning and success.\n\n

SUMMARY:Breaking Down Silos: Leading an Integrated Writing\, Tutoring\, and Library Support Team
DESCRIPTION:What does it look like to create an integrated team of writing services\, peer tutoring support\, and library instruction on campus? At Concordia University\, St. Paul (CSP)\, we've spent the last several years building a unified academic support team that includes instruction librarians and writing and tutoring support managers. In this session\, learn about the transition of separate\, parallel services to a unified student success model that simplifies access and strengthens collaboration.\n\nWe'll discuss the practical realities of organizational restructuring and building trust across professional identities\, aligning different service philosophies\, and navigating staffing and workflow changes. In tandem with personnel restructuring\, CSP has also implemented a new campus-wide scheduling and student success platform that integrates appointments across all services\, and other services on campus. This creates a single\, streamlined access point for students while requiring significant behind-the-scenes coordination. \n\nAttendees will leave with candid lessons learned\, leadership strategies\, and concrete takeaways for supervising integrated academic support teams in ways that honor librarianship while advancing a connected\, student-centered approach.

SUMMARY:How Prepared Are First-Year Students? Faculty Perspectives on Media and Information Literacy Readiness
DESCRIPTION:How prepared are first-year college students to meet the media and information literacy expectations they encounter in academic coursework?\n\nThis session will share findings from a multi-phase research study conducted in partnership with Minitex and the Multicounty Multiype Library Systems (MCMTs)\, alongside an advisory team of school and academic librarians. Wilder Research developed an assessment plan and conducted approximately 25 interviews with (non-library) postsecondary faculty who regularly worked with first-year students. Interviews explored faculty perceptions of students’ research strategies\, source evaluation skills\, use of evidence\, and broader media and information literacy competencies.\n\nTranscripts were analyzed thematically to identify common strengths\, persistent skill gaps\, and areas of misalignment between secondary preparation and postsecondary expectations. Findings were synthesized into a policy brief and informed a review of existing student assessment instruments. The research team created a crosswalk aligning assessment items to ITEM standards and developed a pilot student assessment to measure competencies most relevant to first-year academic work.\n\nParticipants will consider how these findings can inform first-year library instruction\, faculty collaboration\, legislative advocacy for media specialists in all schools\, and the promotion of media literacy instruction in K–12 education.

SUMMARY:Vegetables in the hotdish: Using popular reading collections\, study breaks\, and wellness programming to reach students before and beyond the research paper
DESCRIPTION:Many new undergraduates enter college with vague preconceptions of academic libraries\, namely that they are “book warehouses” and places for quiet study. Students also find library buildings intimidating and are often unaware of\, or confused by library services. While new student orientation events and welcome week programming support students during their transition to University life\, there is frequently a significant gap between the time a student first encounters the library and when they need to utilize its resources. \n\nLibrarians and library staff at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities have attempted to reduce this gap by creating a variety of co-curricular touchpoints where undergraduates can explore library services\, spaces\, and collections in fun and low stakes ways. Through our popular reading collections\, partner events\, and wellness programming\, we are able to meet students with a variety of backgrounds and experiences\, and help them recognize that they have a place on campus and in the academic community. These fun and wellbeing-focused activities occur in an academic setting\, but reinforce that the balance between academic work and pursuing their own interests is essential to success throughout students’ college experience and beyond. For example\, we can promote why it is beneficial to read for pleasure at a reading party event and promote our academic services at the same time. \n\nIn this session\, we will share our “secret sauce” of scalable strategies for getting the most impact out of low stakes events at any sized institution including planning details\, day of success tips\, examples of promotion\, and assessment. We will share tips to create flexible\, sustainable events designed to reach the whole student and build a sense of belonging on campus.
